George Santos

George Anthony Devolder Santos is an American politician from the state of New York. A member of the Republican Party, Santos was elected in 2022 to represent the 3rd District of New York's Congress, covering parts of Long Island and Northeast Queens, after unsuccessfully challenging the seat two years earlier.

Six weeks after his election, the New York Times and other media outlets reported that most of Santos' autobiographical claims appeared to be fabricated, including claims about his ancestry, education, employment, charitable work, and property. He had claimed that his mother's parents were Ukrainian Jews who fled the genocide to Brazil, but documents obtained by multiple sources showed that his mother's parents were born in Brazil and that none of his ancestors were Ukrainian or Jewish. There have been several judgments against Santos in eviction and personal debt cases in the United States, and he has admitted to checking accusations of fraud (which he now denies) in Brazil.

Seven weeks after his election, Santos admitted to lying about his school and professional background. He also admitted to lying about his land ownership. Initially claiming to have "Jewish origins," Santos later stated: "I never claimed to be Jewish [...] I said I was 'Jewish.'"
